THERE will not be a Labour Day Golden Week this year as China adjusts to shorter holidays。 From 1999 up to 2008， there were three three-day-paid vacations and people would work weekends in order to have seven successive days off for May Day， Spring Festival and National Day “golden weeks。“

Spring Festival and National Day remain three-day holidays， although the seven-day scheme is now discouraged。 But joining May Day as one-day holidays this year are the Qingming， Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn festivals。

International Labour Day began in April 1856 when construction workers in Melbourne， Australia， demonstrated for an eight-hour-day without cuts in pay。 Workers worldwide copied their strategy。 In Europe， however， the day already had long been a rural festival， celebrated in various ways。
